The Memory of Asian Tradition Culture
2025 Hudson Valley Gingerbread Competition,NY

This work draws inspiration from the traditional cultures of both China and Japan. I will describe the piece, starting from far to near. In the distance, the mountains are rendered in shades of yellow-green and blue, reflecting the color palette commonly found in ancient Chinese ink paintings. The pink trees represent plum blossoms and cherry blossom, and they are made of chiffon sponge cake, while the tree trunks are made from chocolate.I used a big amount of molasses for the gingerbread, resulting in a rich, dark color that evokes the style of traditional ancient building, and is baked at a low temperature to achieve a firm texture. The design of the house is influenced by ancient Chinese architectural elements, particularly the distinctive roof shape. The walls incorporate Japanese Ukiyo-e painting techniques, such as cranes, lucky cats, and Mount Fuji. Royal icing is used for painting the walls and roofs, and gelatin sheets are used for the windows. In the center, a dragon and phoenix, made from fondant, are designed with hundreds of meticulously crafted pieces. Drawing inspiration from the architectural beauty of Suzhou gardens, I created a small pond using gelatin sheets. To enhance the effect, cookie crumbs were used on the buttercream surface to mimic the texture of a lush lawn.

On March 1st, 2025, I hosted a bake sale to support Stray HELP, an organization dedicated to helping stray cats. My husband and I had previously adopted three wonderful kittens from them, and they’ve truly become one of the best things to ever happen to me. For the bake sale, I offered a variety of treats: cookie mix boxes for $15 each, cake mix boxes for $10 each, and other desserts with no fixed price. In just four hours, I raised $755, all of which I donated to Stray HELP. Over the course of 3-4 days during my break, I worked hard to prepare 26 boxes of cookies and cakes, 36 cupcakes, 35 large American cookies, along with various other desserts that I didn’t count. It was incredibly fulfilling to combine my passion for baking and pastry with my love for animals, and I’m so grateful to have made a difference.
In most Chinese colleges, six students share a small dorm, and mine was just 25 square meters with no kitchen. It was crowded, but it sparked my entrepreneurial drive. When I was 19, I decided to start a business and began making yogurt with just a yogurt maker. It sold out quickly, so I bought a small fridge to keep up. That moment boosted my confidence!
I focused on creating healthy, low-calorie, small-portioned desserts aimed at college girls. Using ingredients like sweet potatoes and squash, I kept things affordable and delicious. Over two and a half years, I made over 100 types of desserts, often delivering them around campus on foot. My brand, Cindy日食铺, had no fixed menu—each day brought something new.
My business wasn’t about profits; it was about sharing joy through food. Customers loved my products and spread the word, growing my customer base from 10 to over 6,000. It was tough—late nights, early classes, and balancing everything on my own—but my passion for food kept me going.
Despite the challenges, I paid for my college tuition and saved for travel and future education after running this business for 3 years. I was even awarded a creativity prize for my dorm business. But the biggest reward came when I landed my first job in Shanghai, thanks to my entrepreneurial experience. The company hired me over hundreds of other candidates because of my creativity, and I skipped the internship—something no one had done before.
It was an unforgettable journey that taught me a lot about determination, creativity, and the power of following your passions.
